Juneteenth to be a national holiday

Juneteenth, a day to remember freedom for slaves.
The house passed the bill 415-14

Yay, I guess.
Not sure what decorations to put up for this one.
This will be another holiday for federal employees like Columbus Day that everyone else still works on.

Anyone have a link to the actual legislation? Would be interesting to see what's actually tucked in there hidden, passed without a question because 'honoring slaves.'

Never. Because near genocide spurred on by railroad companies doesn't matter past lip service. Their skin isn't the correct shade.

What happens when the calendar gets filled with BS holidays? Invent extra days in the year or combine holidays like they do with sexual preferences?

Good for you that you have friends that have celebrated this forever. The first I heard of it was last year as my company decided to make it a holiday. I've got no issue with the holiday, that name is pretty silly though, emancipation day would be much better.

Nice sentiment, and all, but not really historically accurate.

The Emancipation Proclamation only "freed" slaves in southern states not under Union control: effectively nobody. It's like Churchill declaring that all Jews in Nazi occupied territories were free. Slavery was still legal in some Union states and Confederate states under Union control. Once the Confederacy surrendered, slavery was once again legal in those states, since they would then be under Union control.

It would make more sense to celebrate December 6, the day the 13th Amendment was ratified. But I guess the height of the Christmas shopping season would overshadow the holiday. Besides, who cares about historical accuracy anymore?

cities will be renaming streets, juneteenth st, juneteenth ave, juneteenth blvd and juneteenth hwy. and parks playground juneteenth memorial playground, juneteenth national park, and anything else.

Yes, it is baffling at why in the hell taxpayers would bristle at yet another full day's worth of paycheck our taxes will fund for federal employees to sit around navel gazing and not actually working... OR, for the ones who do have to work, get paid time and half or double time just because it marks a day when something happened long, long ago. This #hole has been here since 1776... I'd say it is very likely that in those 245 years, *something* celebratable, commemorateable, memorable, arguably worthy of being named a wonderous holiday has occurred on all 365 days of the year. Given the statistical probability of that, WTF are we all doing working in the first place!?!? Eff it! Let's just award a federal holiday, paid day off, for every day and pay the federal employees to sit at home 365 days a year. Truth be told, most aspects of my life would likely improve if that happened and my overall costs would go down so let's do it.

"Juneteenth", which is already loaded up to my autocorrect surprisingly, is a simpletons summary.

Why not just the date?

Like Hollywood, our Reps are without ideas on how they should navigate all this pandering and postering.
